Well, based on the Alexa chart I've just linked to the post, they barely started a year ago - it may have been longer, but doesn't look like it.

Rapidshare.com for about a year but I believe they started over in Europe and Rapidshare.de:

Pushing almost 3 years. I've noticed it's a very popular way people share music and other files.

Maybe Alexa is counting traffic rather than
unique visitors?

There's an awful lot of bandwidth and
user requests involved in file sharing.
