I agree with your definition of affiliate marketing, but I'm not sure about the "willing to take financial risks" part of it. If an affiliate marketer does the proper background work and keyword research and other research it takes to be successful, then there's really no financial risk involved at all.

I would argue that even for the best affiliates, not every campaign is successful - hence the presence of risk. I agree that risks can be mitigated, but not removed, IMHO.
